When it comes to setting up Autodarts cameras, one of the most common questions is:
Should I use ring mounts or wall mounted arms?
In most cases, the answer is wall mounted arms. However, there are certain situations where ring mounts make more sense. This post will help you decide which setup is right for you.
The Short Answer: Wall Mounted Is Usually Best

If you spend any time in the Autodarts Discord, you’ll hear the same advice again and again: get wall mounted arms.
And they’re right.
Wall mounted arms provide:
- Maximum stability
- Cameras that do not move, shake, or vibrate
- Consistent calibration
- The best overall Autodarts experience
Because the cameras are completely independent of the dartboard and light ring, they are not affected by vibrations when darts hit the board. This leads to better accuracy and fewer calibration issues.
If you want the most reliable and “set it and forget it” setup, wall mounted arms are the gold standard.
When Ring Mounts Make More Sense
Despite the advantages of wall mounts, there are situations where ring mounted cameras are the better choice.

Ring mounts are a good option if:
- You are using a tripod or stand
- You cannot or do not want to drill holes in the wall
- You want a quick, non-permanent setup
- You are not ready to commit to multiple screw holes before fully trying Autodarts
I often hear from people who don’t want to put 9 screw holes in the wall before they even know if Autodarts is for them. That’s completely understandable.
Ring mounts are:
- Fast to install
- Convenient
- Very much “click and play”
However, this convenience does come with compromises.
The Downsides of Ring Mounted Cameras
Because ring mounts attach directly to the light ring, they are more susceptible to movement.
Common issues include:
- Vibration when darts hit the board
- Cameras being knocked or adjusted accidentally
- Calibration drifting over time
Any movement in the ring, board, or stand can affect accuracy. If you choose ring mounts, it’s essential that your board is as stable as possible, with no wobble or shake.
Ring Mounts vs Wall Mounts - Comparison Table
| Feature | Wall Mounted Arms | Ring Mounted Cameras |
| Stability | Excellent | Moderate |
| Vibration Resistance | Very High | Lower |
| Accuracy | Best Possible | Varies on stability |
| Installation | DIY, requires drilling | Simple, click and play |
| Portability | Fixed | Easy to move |
| Best For | Permanent Setup | Stands, No DIY, Beginners |
| Calibration Reliability | Very consistent | Can drift |
Switching Later? No Problem
If you start with ring mounted cameras and later decide to move to a wall mounted setup, the good news is:
You can reuse the cameras.
The cameras can be removed from the ring mounts and installed into wall mounted arms. That means you only need to purchase the arms, not a full new camera set, which helps keep costs down.
Final Thoughts
- Wall Mounted arms are almost always the best choice for stability and accuracy
- Ring mounts are ideal for stand users, renters, or anyone who wants a non-permanent setup
- Starting with ring mounts doesn’t lock you in, you can upgrade later

DIY Tip for Stand Users
Some tripod stand users mount both the board and wall mounted arms to a custom-cut piece of MDF, then attach the entire assembly to the stand. This provides wall-mount-level stability without drilling into a wall.
If you enjoy a DIY project, this is arguably the best stand-based solution available.
